Have you ever had a stain on the ceiling and thought it was the upstairs toilet, so you call the plumber, he says the ring is bad so he resets it and you paint the spot only to see it reappear in a few days, or months? Again you call the plumber, it must be your tub drain, so again he replaces something and says that will do it and, darn it all, it’s back again! It is so frustrating when you can’t figure out where the heck this leak is coming from. Even worse, you have water running down your walls and your ceiling is sagging in several rooms after you come home from a weekend away and you don’t know where the heck all that water is coming from! Having an undetected leak can be aggravating, but with current technology (making it look a bit like a CSI Miami crime scene episode with the use of moisture monitoring equipment, UV lights, and thermography), CPR can trace well-hidden moisture. Even ultrasonic equipment can be used to find leaks in hard-to- spot locations if it is under a slab or hidden in concrete walls etc. Our moisture monitoring equipment varies according to the job it is intended to do and the type of material we are testing.
The Leak is behind a Concrete Wall? No Problem!
We have non-invasive equipment like the non-penetrating moisture meters to locate moisture through materials such as wood, drywall and even concrete with radio frequency. Following the line of moisture and the readings as they get higher can help locate a hidden leak. Penetrating meters that go into a material can be of great help when there is insulation inside walls that could possibly wick moisture from another area or hold the moisture away from the exterior walls if it is not excessively wet. Thermal imaging or “Thermography” is the use of a thermal camera that sees images in hues based on the temperature they give of. This allows us to find hidden leaks and pooling water as well as live vermin, A/C lines, etc that you can’t see with the naked eye. Lastly, the UV light, just like in CSI shows, finds hidden moisture that is generally fluids such as blood, urine etc., that can cause odor and moisture issues that are not easily found.
Animal Smells?
While cats and dogs are what you might normally think of in this situation, it is common for us to get calls for animals such as raccoon’s, possums, and other wildlife that have inhabited attics, crawlspaces and walls, causing these issues.
